One quick bit of news first of all. I'm trying to be more serious as a writer and possibly publish a book one day so I've created a wordpress, facebook and twitter account under my pen name. So here are the links to those in case there's anyone who wants to follow me.

And I felt like doing something a little different with my usual music meme so I decided to turn pandora on and write drabbles. Also yea, I'm listening to the Jonathan Coulton station. I've desperately needed some cheering up lately.

1. Soft Rocked By Me - Jonathan Coulton

"Here's looking at you, kid", Vimes said trying to relax and smile.
Sybil smiled shyly back at him. She'd put a lot of thought into this evening and it actually looked like it was going to pay off. She gave his hand a little squeeze before taking another sip of her wine. This courting thing wasn't as complicated and daunting as she'd spent her life thinking it was. So what was different? Had she gotten better at the art of seduction? After not bothering about men for at least a decade? Not likely. So the difference was definitely the man.

2. Why Does the Sun Shine? The Sun is an Incandescent Gas - They Might Be Giants

Young Sam was smart. He probably got it from his mother, Vimes thought. He was much smarter than Vimes ever hoped to be. But along with inheriting his mother's smarts, he'd inherited Vimes' talent for asking uncomfortable questions. In this instance, Young Sam asked,
"Why does the sun shine?"
Vimes hadn't known how exactly to answer that. Either that hadn't come up in his brief education or he'd just forgotten over the years.

3. City Hall - Tenacious D

Poor old Snapcase, Vimes thought watching the man hang by his figgin. There was a nice blend of sarcasm and sincerity there. On the one hand, he was glad to see the old bastard pay at last but on the other, he hated seeing Ankh-Morpork's idea of getting involved in civic affairs. It always ended in rioting. He was still in awe of Keel for managing to prevent one little riot after all the years.
He waited outside the Oblong Office now. There was a new man in charge now and in the course of meeting with all the civic leaders, Vimes had accidentally ended up on his list. Lupine Wonse, the Patrician's new secretary, opened the door and said,
"Lord Vetinari will see you now."

4. Oedipus Rex - Tom Lehrer

In hindsight, an Ephebian tragedy was not the best idea ever for a date. It would have been better, Sybil thought, if Sam had been annoyed or shocked at the surprise twist or possibly, slept right through it like men were supposed to do. But no, they were courting and he was still keen and so he paid attention and at the end of the play, he'd said 'I arrested a bloke for that once' in some odd attempt to make conversation.

5. Party at the CIA - Weird Al Yankovic

It could sometimes feel surreal when Vimes was letting some assassin's guild student out of his traps. They were always so young but what else did he expect? Even Assassins have to start somewhere, he'd been young too once. But they weren't just young, they acted young. Sometimes, depending on how complicated the trap, he'd get to talking to them and most conversations steered to normal topics like exams, dates and parties.

6. You, Me and Steve - Garfunkel and Oates

Love Sam, love the Watch, Sybil reminded herself when another quiet dinner at home was interrupted by frantic knocking at the door. She could almost recognize individual watchmen from their knocks but she could certainly tell when it was the Watch that came a-knockin'. She hated it but she was losing a bit of patience. She'd have to make some arrangements with the Watch, maybe some sort of signal, a rota, something.

7. Experimental Film - They Might Be Giants

The moving picture craze was all over the city. Theaters were sprouting up everywhere and when the Omnious was too crowded, Vimes and Sybil would retreat to one of the smaller ones. And always regret it. One theater Vimes insisted they leave in a hurry when he recognized the actress as one he'd seen on dirty postcards. But that wasn't nearly as bad as the one that kept the camera running on a bowl of fruit for twenty minutes.

8. Still Alive - Portal Soundtrack

The young man and unliscended assassin tripped the pursuing watchman and pushed him off the roof with his last dredges of strength. It was a tall building and the rain came down in buckets overhead. He looked over the edge but the man had disappeared from sight already. He must be dead, the young man thought and let out a sigh. He leaned against the chimney to catch his breath. Then his heart stopped for a second when he heard someone climbing up onto the roof.
"Still alive, sunshine!" Vimes roared.

9. Pregnant Women Are Smug - Garfunkel and Oates

"We're going to have a baby," Sybil told Brenda.
"That's wonderful," Brenda said but she didn't sound like she meant it much.
"Something wrong?" she asked.
"Oh!" Brenda said suddenly realizing how she sounded, "Sorry, it's just that my daughter and her husband are having a baby too and she's being... you know. You'd think she was some mother goddess."
Sybil chuckled for half a second and then made herself stop.

10. We Will All Go Together When We Go - Tom Lehrer

Either Ankh-Morpork or the Disc itself seemed to come under threat once a year, Vimes thought. He remembered the red star, the sourceror, moving pictures, those snow globes, Cohen... Seriously, what was it about discworld that drew the end of the world? He really should look into it. He got a feeling that those fools up in Cori Celesti or something even bigger and worse than them might just think that it was funny. He resisted the urge to pack himself a suitcase and go up there and ask those bastards a few serious questions.

They're all great, as usual, but I almost keeled over at Pregnant Women Are Smug. Because, not only funny, but TRUE. Also, I could totally see Brenda and Sybil having a "yes, most of them are smug wackadoos" conversation, even with Sybil pregnant.

thanks very much, I was sorta conflicted about how to go about it. Part of me wondered if Sybil would be more self-conscious about how she acted since she's probably been around lots of smug preggers over the years but then, she's not self-conscious really. I should just be grateful I didn't end up having to write one of their other songs like Sex With Ducks, F*** You or Weed Card.
